These hills have rich history and the caves inside the chalk cliff are ancient. The caves that are open for public are about one kilometer long.
The hills were and are called Holy Mountains and a monastery was founded here in 1844. The monks discovered the ancient caves, continued them and built cave churches there.
Many Orthodox Christians have made a pilgrimage to this sacred place, the spiritual center of the southeastern Ukraine.
It is a city in Donetsk Oblast (province) of Ukraine. Population is 13,151 (2001). The name of the town stands for 'gift of salt' both in Russian and Ukrainian. In Soviet times, until 1991, the city was known as Karlo-Libknekhtivsk. The main enterprises of the city are related to mining and processing industries: State Enterprise Association Artyomsol is mining and processing rock salt and Knauf Gips Donbass (a subsidiary of a German gypsum producer KNAUF). The town has a major tourist attraction: the underground galleries and chambers of salt mines, which are also used extensively for speleo (cave) treatment of asthma and other lung diseases from the 1993. Soledar is administratively subordinated to Artemivsk.
The Winery is the one of the largest factories in Europe in the production of champagne with a traditional bottle method. It was established in 1950 year. The best traditions of the wine production let the plant make sparkling wine, which quality is almost the same with the best world producers of champagne.
Artemovsk winery is an enterprise, where all cycle of the production is going under the ground, in the specific microclimate of gypsum adits.
The conditions of the tunnels 70 miters below the ground are ideal for production of sparkling wine: stable temperature (+12 - +14), auspicious air moisture (88 - 90%) allow to make the best sparkling wine in all Ukraine. During the excursion you can see alabaster adits, history of production of champagne and tasting 5-7 sorts of champagne.
The city of Donetsk is one of the biggest regional centers in Ukraine. It covers 381 square kilometers, with a population of about 1,131,700.
Being large industrial town, Donetsk is especially beautiful and very green. It is made up of 9 districts which are linked together by tram, trolley and bus and air junctions. It also has well-developed air and railway services. Donetsk is administrative center of Donetsk region. Donetsk was founded in summer 1869, when the building of metallurgical works started there. Every tourist, who has opportunity to visit Ukraine, tries to see Donetsk, with the large quantity of the places of rest, restaurants and night clubs.
BERDYANSK is an international trade seaport of Ukraine, on the north coast of the Sea of Azov. Berdyansk is famous for its wide range of fishes, for its therapeutic mud and mineral springs. Above all, Berdyansk is a sea resort, especially well known for its excellent sanatoriums. Some of them are more than a 100 years old and their special treatments, available all year long, have contributed to making Berdyansk a popular destination in spring, summer, autumn and even in winter! During 'The Season', the city is invaded by tourists, mainly from Ukraine, Russia, but also by foreign tourists.
